The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove MP, announced that he would bring the BSF programme - aimed at transforming schools with state of the art buildings and ICT over the next 15 years - to an end.
However, 706 schools will open under new arrangements being agreed by the coalition government. Of these, nearly 386 schools are likely to be new build, 262 to be remodeled or refurbished and 26 will have an ICT refit only. The 123 academy projects which have not reached financial close will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
Shadow Education Secretary, Ed Balls has called the decision a "tragedy".
This has come as a huge disappointment to Coventry schools; under the original BSF plans nine Coventry schools were to be rebuilt, 11 others refurbished, and 22 modernised with new computers and other equipment. Out of the city schools due to benefit from BSF, only Sidney Stringer Academy has escaped the axe, as building work has already started. All three Coventry MPs have signed an early day motion - a formal motion submitted for debate in the House of Commons - calling on the Government to reinstate the BSF programme.
